This weekend in OC – 1/7/12

There are lots of fun things happening around here right now!  In case you’re looking for something fun to do, here are a few ideas:

Home Depot free kids’ workshop tomorrow from 9 am – noon for kids ages 5 – 12.  Home Depot offers free kids’ workshops the first Saturday of every month.  This month, you and your kiddos can build a savings shed.  Read all about it courtesy of Daytripping Mom here

Saturday is also Target free Saturday at the La Habra Children’s Museum.  Free admission all day!  If you’ve never taken your kids to this museum, I highly recommend it.  There are lots of fun exhibits there like the Carousel Room, the Science Station and the Kids on Stage room, complete with costumes, lighting, sound effects and more!  For more information, click here

Sunday there’s a guided nature walk happening at Santiago Oaks park in Orange.  The walk is free, parking is $5.  The nature center opens at 10 am, and the beginner walk goes from 11 am – 1 pm.  You can see all the details here

Looking for a culinary adventure?  Try conveyor belt sushi with your kiddos!  This is one of Real OC Daughter’s favorite outings.  There are 3 places we’ve enjoyed – Kura Sushi in Costa Mesa, Kula Sushi in Irvine, and Sushilicious in Irvine.  Kula in Irvine probably has the best quality sushi of the 3 mentioned, but they also tend to have the longest wait – they’re located in the Diamond Jamboree Plaza which can get pretty crowded.  But, if you do head there, you can always check out Sticki Picki in the same center for some family fun (think costumes, photo booths, and computerized effects) or Guppy House for a shaved ice for dessert.  Kura Sushi is our go-to for conveyor belt sushi.  It’s not the best sushi I’ve ever had, but it’s fresh and tasty, and Real OC Daughter tends to be an adventurous eater when we go there.  Plus, House of Yogurt is right down the street for a yummy treat afterwards.

Whatever your weekend brings, may it be full of fun and laughter!

Fun Weekend Activity – Kids’ Garden Workshop

Do you ever feel like your kids have no idea where food comes from?  We get a basket of produce from Tanaka Farms every week, and we still find surprises in there!  Like a stalk of edamame beans (no, they don’t just come from a freezer bag at TJ’s), or persimmons, or one of my daughter’s favorites that I never would have thought to try making, ruby chard.  Farm-fresh food is educational, fun, and healthy!

If you’re searching for new ways to introduce your kids to fresh produce, you might want to check out the free garden workshop this Sunday from 11 am – 1 pm at the Great Park in Irvine.  Parking and admission are free, and the workshop runs every half hour.  This Sunday, the workshop is all about locally grown foods and the history of food production in OC.  The kids also get to make a seed tape of their favorite local crop to take home and plant.

Can’t make it this Sunday?  There will be another workshop on December 11th, all about rain and why it’s so important.

These look like great opportunities to get into the outdoors with the family and enjoy a fun, hands-on learning experience!

Make sure to call the Visitors Center (1-866-829-3829)  before you go to confirm the event is still going – they will cancel if the weather isn’t great.

My Favorite OC Park – Colonel Bill Barber Park

I love, love, love Colonel Bill Barber Park in Irvine.  I was so lucky that when I called a good friend to see if she wanted to get together for an outdoor playdate, she suggested we go there.  We hadn’t been in a few months, so I was excited to go back.  And I wasn’t disappointed!

If you’ve never been there, it’s really worth a trip.  There are multiple sets of play equipment, shaded table areas, lots of open grass space, sidewalks perfect for bikes and scooters, and nice tennis courts.  But the highlight of the park, for my daughter, has always been the water faucet with cascading bowls in the sandy area.  We bring a giant bag of sand toys, a beach towel, and a change of clothes, and she is entertained for hours.  It’s not a big fountain (though they do have one of those in the lovely, picturesque rose garden), just a faucet with bowls to catch the water.  It’s perfect for sand castles and moats.

Our day started out with a ride on the tire swing and a bit of climbing on the play equipment.  Then Real OC Daughter and her friends played a few rounds of hide and seek on one of the play structures.  After that, we settled in under the shade for a nice picnic.  It was such a gorgeous day!

After lunch, the kids ripped off their shoes and pulled out the sand toys.  And that’s when the real fun began!  They poured, splashed, and dug and dug and dug.  There were holes, and puddles, and towers of sand, and they were all having such a great time.  They created a river in the sand that was about 6-feet long.

Oh, and the best part?  She fell asleep tonight so easily – content, tired, rosy-cheeked, and talking about what a wonderful day she had at the park.

If you’re looking for a fun park to visit with the family, go check it out!  Two bonuses – there is usually plenty of parking and the restrooms are close to the playground.   One caveat – if you have multiple, younger children, the play area is a little spread out and it can be hard to keep an eye on them.  It’s good to come with another family and split up supervising duties.

I was having too much fun today to take any photos, but there are a few nice images on their website so you can get an idea of what’s there.  There’s also a great review of the park, along with some photos, over at FunOrangeCountyParks.com.

Family Art Sundays at the Long Beach Museum of Art

I can’t believe I missed this when I was putting together my family and budget-friendly list of July activities!  I guess technically, it IS just outside the OC – Long Beach, but that’s still very close to home.  And best of all, this activity is free!  The Arts Council for Long Beach has generously sponsored these free Sundays, as well as free museum admission every Friday throughout the summer.

Every Sunday throughout the summer, the Long Beach Museum of Art is offering a family art day from 1 – 3 pm.  All materials are provided to help your family create a masterpiece based on one currently displayed in the museum.  Each Sunday offers a different artwork inspiration using varied medium.

This Sunday, July 10th is an embossed aluminum painting based on a work by Max Finkelstein.  Looks like fun!

As a side note, I have been to the lovely cafe just outside the museum, Claire’s, and I would recommend it for a nice family brunch before the class, if you’re in the mood. The cafe has very pretty patio seating overlooking the ocean.  They have a very nice breakfast menu that’s available all day Saturday or Sunday.  Reservations are recommended – call 562-432-2119 ext. 270.

Fairy Garden Classes for Kids

Recently I had the pleasure of taking my daughter to a fairy garden class at the Dragonfly Shops & Gardens in Old Towne Orange.  What a treat!

This shop is such a gem tucked inside a quaint little corner of Orange County.  It’s an old house, with a beautiful outdoor garden shop.  There was a nice table and chairs set up on the front patio in preparation for the class, and one of the lovely owners, Kim, helped the kids get right to work.

First they painted their fairy garden pots.  There were plenty of paint colors on hand to please boys and girls alike, and I could see the creative juices flowing! The kids got really into designing their pots to make them perfectly pleasing to the fairies who would come visit.  There were flowers, stripes, polka dots, and curly painted words in brights shades of purple, red, orange and pink.

While the pots were drying, it was time to decorate the birdhouse stakes to go into the gardens.  Kim brought out the sequins, and the girls oohed and ahhed with delight.  They got to cover some darling little wooden birdhouses with sequins, gems, wood cutouts, and beads.  These would certainly attract fairies to the gardens!

Once the pots were dry, they needed filling.  The kids got to put their hands into some dirt and fill up their pots.  A few of the girls (yes, mine, unfortunately!) were hesitant to stick their bare hands into the soil, but once they got started, fears were quickly banished.  There’s just something about the feeling of good dirt between your fingers, isn’t there?  And when it came time to sprinkle fairy dust (glitter) into the soil and mix it in, well, they were sold!

Next came the plants.  Pretty, dainty little plants just perfect for the tiniest of fairies.  And in beautiful shades of green, pink, gold, orange, and red.  Lots to choose from!

Then the kids covered any exposed soil with tiny rocks.  Kim explained to them that fairies don’t like to get their feet dirty, so it was important to cover all the soil with the pebbles.

Finally, they put on all the finishing touches.  They each got a mini arbor, reflection ball, their decorated birdhouse, and some tiny critters, like ladybugs and frogs, to finish off their gardens.  They were all so proud of their creations, and so excited to bring them home to entice the fairies to come and visit! Amazingly, something in the garden moves around every night, so when Real OC daughter goes to check on it, she knows the fairies have been there.  And since I’m a huge fan of anything that keeps imagination and the magic of childhood alive, I’m absolutely loving it!

I highly recommend checking out the fairy garden classes at Dragonfly Shops and Gardens.  The classes are offered on the first Saturday of the month.  They also do fairy garden birthday parties – such a fun idea!  For more details on the Dragonfly Shops and Gardens, you can visit their website HERE
