Michael’s Jar of Crafts

Have you seen the Giant Jar of Crafts at Michael’s? I bought one for my daughter, and it has provided HOURS of entertainment!

I love toys and activities that inspire creative, original thought. This bucket certainly fits the bill. It’s a large plastic bucket filled with all sorts of trinkets for crafting – buttons, beads, crepe paper, foam balls, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, and more.  It even comes with scissors and glue.  Oh, and the best part…it’s only $9.99! And there is a coupon right now for 50% off, so you can pick it up for only $5. Seriously, how can you beat that?

So far, my daughter has used it to make a caterpillar habitat in a box, a lizard nest, and bracelets that she is selling to raise money for the local animal shelter.  And the jar is still nearly full!

It’s a great thing to have on hand for a rainy day, a playdate, or even to give as a birthday gift.

You can see more details HERE, and get a 50% off Michael’s coupon (good through June 18th, so you need to use it soon!) HERE.

Happy Crafting!

Real Tip Tuesday – Easter Basket Ideas

The bunny is coming!!!  And if you’re anything like me, you aren’t too excited about him bringing another basket full of candy.  Sure, the kids love it, but after having 3 cavities filled this past year, I’m not so sure it’s the best “gift” the bunny can give!  So, I’m sending him some new ideas for this Easter.  I’d like him to get a little more, well, creative.  Perhaps Mr. EB wants to go with a “themed” basket this year.  It might make his shopping a bit easier.  Some choices to consider:

Gardening – seeds, gloves, gardening tools

Beach – sand toys, beach ball, bathing suit

Backyard Play – jumprope, sidewalk chalk, bubbles

Art – paint, brushes, canvas, colored pencils, oil pastels, buttons, beads

Craft – t-shirts, fabric paint, stencils, iron-ons

Cooking – Mom & Me cookbook, utensils, mixing bowl, chefs hat, apron

Travel – photo album, book on future travel destination, maps, tickets or gift card for local attractions

Movie night – DVD, popcorn, jammies or blanket

Glamour Girl – nail polish, lip gloss, hair accessories

Pen Pal – stationery, pen, address book, stamps

And don’t forget, Amazon is a great place for the bunny to shop.  No sales tax, free shipping on orders over $25, and everything arrives in a generic brown box.  Please consider asking your bunny to click on my Amazon link or browse through my Amazon store to help support Real OC Mom!

Hope this helps your bunny get inspired this year -  Happy Spring!

Real Tip Tuesday – Unique Valentines

It seems like gift-giving becomes more and more challenging the older I get.  If my husband wants or needs anything, he just buys it for himself.  And gift for our parents?  Well, that’s nearly impossible!

So when I got an email the other day about CHOC heart cards, I was intrigued.

If you go to THIS LINK, you can select a heart card designed by current or former CHOC patients.  Then you personalize the card, choose a date to have it emailed to the recipient (or print it yourself, if you prefer), and make a donation in the recipient’s name. All proceeds benefit the CHOC heart institute.

And the designs are so cute!  Look at this one:

Or this one:

I couldn’t help but think what special and unique Valentines these CHOC cards would make!  Rather than buy expensive cards at the store, I can make donations in the names of my loved ones and send them these beautiful cards.

That’s a tip that makes my heart sing!

100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know

Here’s another great idea just in time for your holiday shopping!  Thanks to my daughter’s school library website, I found this list by the New York Public Library of the top 100 picture books for young children.  You may already have some of them in your home library, but it’s a great resource if you’re looking for other ideas. It’s also a great list to bring with you the next time you take a trip to your library.  You can get the full list HERE.

Stocking Stuffers for Kids

This year, I am helping Santa get a little more creative with my daughter’s stocking.  Not that she wouldn’t love silly bandz and lollipops, but it might be nice for Santa to bring some more interesting and, dare I say it, “educational” items.

So, here are three of my favorite ideas:

“Seeing Stars”  - a book that comes with its own mini flashlight and punch cards so kids can shine constellations onto the wall or table.  What a fun way to learn about the night sky!

Seeing Stars: Shining Star Light

Classic Tangoes – a classic puzzle game.  This game can be played with one or two players (or in teams), and encourages problem solving and spatial reasoning skills.

Classic Tangoes

Do-a-Dot Art paint set in sponge-tip bottles.  A great way to paint without the spills and mess.  Can be used in the car for travel bingo (thanks to a mom friend for this idea!), to mark chore charts or calendars at home, or just for fun art projects.

Do-a-Dot Art Brilliant (set of 6)

What I’m Reading

This week, I’m smack in the middle of a real page-turner- “The Girl Who Played With Fire”.  It’s the sequel to “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, which I enjoyed, but I have to say, I’m enjoying the sequel so much more!

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage)

It’s what I would classify as a crime thriller.  There’s a feisty, socially awkward heroine, a murder mystery, and an underground sex ring about to be exposed. And given my secret affinity for old Law and Order episodes, I’m finding myself really addicted – I’m about one-half of the way through, and I’m having trouble putting it down.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it ends, so off to read some more!  Has anyone else read it?  What did you think of it?  And please, don’t spoil the ending!!

Make a Face Plate – Perfect for Picky Eaters (or just for fun!)

I was flipping through my most recent copy of “Family Fun” magazine, and saw the cutest idea!  It’s one of those things that makes you think “I wish I would have thought of that!”.  Genius, really…

It’s a place with a cute little face on it.  The face is bald and unadorned.  Which means you and your kids get to decorate it with all sorts of food.  What a fun activity AND a great way to get your kids to try new foods!!! There’s the boy face:

Fred and Friends Food Face, Boy

Or the girl face (with eyelashes and fuller lips)

Ms Food Face Dinner Plate

What a great way to get creative and get healthy food on your kid’s plate!  I showed the pictures to my daughter, and we couldn’t help but giggle at some of the funny faces, like this angry man:

Fred and Friends Food Face, Boy

Or this older gentleman:

And while the girl with the nose ring was not our favorite, we really enjoyed the granny sprinkle-hair and the spa lady with cucumber on her eyes:

If you’re looking for a unique gift for a toddler, or just a way to introduce some new foods and fun into your family’s mealtime, you might want to check these out.  They’re made by Fred & Friends and available in my Amazon store – $10 for the boy or $15 for the girl (not sure why the price difference).  I love that they are not icky plastic, but beware if you feel your kid isn’t ready for ceramic just yet.  They are also dishwasher safe – hip, hip hooray!!!

Looking to order cute stationery for your child?  Amy Adele Stationery has some really great options.  And right now through October 31st, they are offering 50% off many of their flat cards!  This includes the “fill in the blank” thank-you notes that are perfect for young kids who are new to writing.  They have lots of themes available – bowling, science, roller-skating, crafts, cooking, mermaid and more!

Mermaid Flat Card

There are also “sports-themed” flat cards that make a great personalized kids’ birthday gift or party invitation.  Know a girl who loves soccer?  Or swimming?  Name the sport, and they’ve got it – including choice of hair color.  I think the blonde gymnast is in order for Real OC Daughter, and this baseball boy is pretty cute too!

Brunette Baseball Boy Flat Card

Getting into the Christmas spirit yet?  You might want to check out their holiday assortment.  These make great thank you notes from kids or gift enclosures for neighbors or teacher gifts.  I think this one is pretty cute.

25% off at Mini Boden

Ready to get a jump on your holiday shopping?  Check out this great deal from Boden:

Through Wedensday, 9/29, get 20% off Boden Men’s and Women’s clothes, and get 25% off Mini Boden and Johnnie b!

25% off Mini Boden is hard to resist!  They have some really cute, sweet things for little girls.  We especially love their t-shirts and lightweight outerwear (the heavier coats are really too heavy for where we live).  One of our favorite items is the teddy zip-through:
Teddy Zip Through
cozy teddy zip-through

My daughter has had this for almost 3 years, and it still looks new!

Since my daughter is an animal lover, there are lots of great tops to choose from.  The retro print tee is super cute and comes in a poodle, cat or bunny print:
Retro Print T-shirt Retro print t-shirt

I will admit that the pants are not a favorite at our house.  I think they are super cute and well-made, but for some reason, my daughter just doesn’t prefer them.  I’ve heard this from other moms, too, and we’re all baffled about it!

This 25% off deal is only good until Wednesday.  Enjoy!
